Private Piano Instruction

Private Piano Instruction: (1 credit/quarter up to 3 quarters per course)

Music 180 (minimum 4 years experience or permission by instructor)
Music 280 (prerequisite Music 180)

Students who enroll in private piano lessons (one-on-one instruction in a studio setting) should already have a minimum of FOUR years experience playing the piano, or can play the piano proficiently. Private instruction is given based upon a scheduled audition between the student and the instructor.  Please call 533-3719 to set up an appointment.  Scheduled lessons will be at an arranged time suitable to both the instructor and student. Those students who are beginner students or have little musical background and are interested in learning to play the piano, should enroll in one of the class piano courses offered through the SFCC music department.

MUSIC 180: Private Instruction in Piano (ONE CREDIT)

FIRST YEAR – Syllabus

OFFERED FALL, WINTER AND SPRING QUARTERS

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES

To provide private piano instruction to the individual student.

Keyboard application skills include:

TECHNIQUE:

Scales:  played one-four octaves apart (depending on students ability) in parallel and/or contrary motion, hands together

·        Major - Group I (C, G, D, A, E)  Group II (B, F#, C#) Group III Scales (F, Bb, Eb, Ab)

·        Minor – all white/black keys (harmonic, melodic, natural modes)

·        Chromatic Scales – starting on any key

Arpeggios:   2-handed arpeggios played two-four octaves in parallel and/or contrary motion, hands together

·        All Major and Minor keys, and/or Dominant and Diminished Seventh Arpeggios

Triads/Inversions:  played 1-4 octaves, broken, solid, and/or alternating, hands together

·        3-note triads, 4-note triads, Dominant Seventh and Diminished Seventh Chords

SIGHT READING:

Material should be chosen from school song books, hymns, easy four hand music.  Sight reading will be an integral part of the lesson and will be at a level consistent with the student’s abilities.

REPERTOIRE:

All repertoire will be decided in consultation with the instructor according to the instructor’s assessment of the needs and abilities of the individual student.

Choose TWO pieces from the 3 categories listed below:

1)    Keyboard composers before 1770

·        little preludes, minuets or two-part inventions of J.S. Bach; or similar works by other composers.

2)    Classical Period

·        Sonatinas or short sonatas of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Kuhlau, Clementi or other composers in this period.

3)    Romantic, Impressionistic and Contemporary Periods

·        Bartok, Kabalevsky, or Prokofiev children’s pieces;  Schumann, Album for the Young, Chopin Preludes, Mazurkas, Waltzes; easy works of Satie, Ravel, Debussy; or other works of similar difficulty.

 

JURY EXAMINATION:

All piano students enrolled in Music 180 will be expected to play a jury at the end of the quarter. 

Two solo selections will be performed, and one MUST be memorized.

·        works by Ravel, Debussy Preludes; Bartok, Kabalevsky, Prokofiev or other composers of similar difficulty.
