Class Piano Instruction is offered for 6 quarters (2 years) at SFCC music department and meets twice a week. Music 176 is intended for the general population of beginner piano students who have had little or no training. All other class piano courses offered follow chronologically by experience and level of difficulty. Please note that not all courses are offered each quarter. In order to determine if a student can place out of a class and into a more advanced piano class, an optional placement exam can be arranged by the student with the instructor.

MUSIC 176 "CLASS INSTRUCTION IN PIANO - BEGINNER"

SYLLABUS (2 credits)

OFFERED FALL, WINTER, and SPRING QUARTERS

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES

A basic hands-on introduction to keyboard musicianship and proficiency within a group setting.  Keyboard application skills include an introduction to music reading, rhythms, improvisation, technique, solo repertoire and group ensembles.  This course is intended for the complete beginner or for students with little experience in piano. 

 Keyboard application skills include:

·        Sightreading:  basic note reading (level 1) from the Grand Staff at sight

·        Intervallic reading: using the Grand Staff and landmark locators

·        Hand-eye Coordination:  tapping rhythmic exercises with both hands

·        Solo pieces:  reading and performing solo repertoire with the score and for memory

·        Group work:  counting out rhythms in pairs and playing duets with partners

·        An introduction to basic transposition of simple tunes

·        An introduction to basic improvisatory skills

·        Development of keyboard technique and finger dexterity:

·        Major and Minor penta-scales, hands together

·        Major and Minor chords, hands together

·       Chromatic scales in contrary motion - two octaves, hands together

·       Major and Minor cross-over hand Arpeggios

MUSIC 177 "CLASS INSTRUCTION IN PIANO – BEGINNER CON’T"

SYLLABUS (2 credits)

OFFERED WINTER and SPRING QUARTERS

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES

A continuing development of keyboard musicianship and proficiency within a group setting. 
Keyboard application skills include an introduction to chord progressions, harmonization, transposition, and further development of sight-reading, two-handed rhythms, technique, solo repertoire and group ensembles.  Prerequisite: MUSIC 176. 

Keyboard application skills include:

·        Sightreading:  continuation of note reading (level 2) from the Grand Staff at sight

·        Hand-eye Coordination:  tapping rhythmic exercises in simple and compound meter with both hands

·        Rhythm:  introduction to the dotted quarter note, and the “up-beat” or “pick-up”

·       Solo pieces:  reading and performing solo repertoire with the score and for memory

·       Group work:  playing duets with partners and ensemble pieces in groups

·        Introduction to Major Chord Progressions:  primary chords with inversions -- I(i) – IV(iv) – I(i) - V - I(i)

·        Harmonization of simple RH melodies with LH blocked chord accompaniment – using chords I, IV6/4, V6/5

·        Transposition of simple melodies and harmonization’s into different keys 

·        Continuation of basic improvisational skills

·        Development of keyboard technique and finger dexterity:

·        Major Scales:  played one octave apart in parallel motion, hands together

·        Major - Group I (C, G, D, A, E), Group II (B, F#, C#) and Group III Scales (F, Bb, Eb, Ab)

·        Major and Minor Triads and inversions:  one octave, hands separate – played broken, then solid

·        Review of Circle of 5ths progression using major/minor penta-scales, played hands together

·        Review of Chromatic scale: contrary motion, three-four octaves, hands together

·       Review of Cross over hand arpeggios - all major and minor keys

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES

 A continuing development of keyboard musicianship and proficiency within a group setting. Keyboard application skills include an introduction to secondary chords, varied accompaniment patterns, and further development of sight-reading, two-handed rhythms, technique, solo repertoire and group ensembles.  Prerequisite: MUSIC 177. 

 Keyboard application skills include:

·        Sightreading:  continuation of note reading (level 3) from the Grand Staff at sight

·        Hand-eye Coordination:  tapping rhythmic exercises in simple and compound meter with both hands

·        Solo pieces:  reading and performing appropriate solo repertoire with the score and for memory

·        Group work:  playing duets with partners and ensemble pieces in groups

·        An introduction to secondary chords in Major/Minor keys:

·        ii (iio) (supertonic),  vi (VI) (submediant)

·        Introduction to varied chord progressions using secondary chords in both Major and Minor keys

·        Harmonization and transposition of melodies using primary and secondary chords

·        Introduction to varied accompaniment patterns – waltz style and broken chord patterns

·        Improvisation skills

·        Development of keyboard technique and finger dexterity:

·        Two- handed Arpeggios – 3 octaves, parallel motion, hands together

·        Chromatic scales:  parallel motion – starting on any key, one octave, hands together

·        Group I and II Major Scales:  extended to TWO octaves apart in parallel motion, hands together

·        Introduction to Minor Scales  - Group I (a, d, e, c, g -- harmonic, melodic, natural modes)

·        Triads and Inversions:  ONE octave, hands together - broken, then solid

 Advanced keyboard musicianship and proficiency within a group setting.  Keyboard application skills include an introduction to basic conducting, and further development of keyboard technique, harmonization, transposition, improvisation, sight-reading, solo repertoire and group ensembles.  Prerequisite: MUSIC 178. 

 Keyboard application skills include:

·        Music reading:  advanced solo repertoire pieces played with the score and/or for memory and sight reading

·        Group work:  playing duets with partners and ensemble pieces in groups

·        Critique in-class solo performances using written comments

·        Introduction to Conducting in simple meter:  conducting with one hand while playing with the other

·        Harmonization and transposition of RH and LH melodies using varied accompaniment patterns

·        Improvisational skills

·        Further development of keyboard technique:

·        Chromatic scales (2 8ves): parallel motion - starting on any key, hands together

·        All Major scales (including Group III) and white-keyed Minor scales (all 3 modes)

·        Two-handed arpeggios:  all Major/Minor keys - three octaves, hands together

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES

A continuing development of advanced keyboard musicianship and proficiency within a group setting. Keyboard application skills include an introduction to varied chord progressions using secondary chords and inversions, group discussions on performance anxiety and related issues, and further development of keyboard technique, harmonization, transposition, improvisation, sight-reading, solo repertoire and group ensembles.  Prerequisite: MUSIC 276. 

 Keyboard application skills include:

·        Music reading:  advanced solo repertoire pieces played with the score and/or for memory and sight reading

·        Group work:  discussions about “performance anxiety” – research paper and duet/ensemble pieces

·        Improvisational skills – improvising with RH while playing LH chordal accompaniment

·        Learning varied accompaniment patterns in LH while harmonizing and transposing simple melodies

o       Jump bass, alberti bass, waltz style patterns

·         Minor chord progressions and their inversions:

 A continuing development of advanced keyboard musicianship and proficiency within a group setting.  Keyboard application skills include an introduction to chorale score reading, accompaniment, and further development of keyboard technique, harmonization, transposition, improvisation, sight-reading, solo repertoire and group ensembles.  Prerequisite: MUSIC 277. 

 Keyboard application skills include:

·        Chorale score reading: 3 and 4-part score reading [SAB, ATB, T(1)T(2)B, SATB]

·        Advanced sightreading and rhythmic exercises

·        Advanced solo repertoire pieces played with the score and/or for memory

·        Advanced duet/ensemble pieces played with a partner or group of players

·        Advanced Harmonization & Transposition (varied accompaniment patterns) with a strong emphasis on minor

·        Introduction to Chord progressions using Secondary Dominant Functions
